Chapter Thirteen
Hamptonâs invitation came as a bit of a surprise, given that our recent interactions have been quite frosty. Iâm even more surprised to realize his wife isnât home.
âYouâre okay with ordering in?â he asks as we sit down in the living room.
âSure. Iâm curious. Is this an intervention of one?â I try to keep my tone light, non-accusatory. We still have to work together, and weâre still friendsâI hope.
âNo, just a couple of friends hanging out after work. Would you like a beer?â
âYes, please.â
âBe right back.â
He brings a couple of bottlesâmy favourite, I realizeâand a take-out menu from the kitchen. We both choose, and he makes the call. When that is done, an awkward silence settles between us, until we both speak at the same time.
âIâm sorry,â he starts.
âI donât want this to be a recurring subject,â I say at the same time. âWeâll keep work and home life separate best we can, but it was Rachel who invited Kendall. So far, itâs working. We get to know what she knows.â
âIt sounds good in theory,â he admits.
âYouâre not convinced. Iâm not supposed to keep an eye on her anymore. Sheâs my wife. Sheâll be in when and if we need her, nothing more. Things have changed.â
âYou have taught me a lot in the time weâve worked together.â
âThank you?â If it sounds more like a question, itâs because I know that wonât be all, and Iâm not sure where heâs going with this.
âI mean it. I always thought you were one of the sharpest most level-headed people in the field. Thatâs why I canât understand.â
âI just tried to explain.â
âAnd the fact that a man was shot in front of you, days after your wedding, doesnât bother you?â
âWhat kind of question is that? Kendall didnât shoot him, nor did she order anyone to do it.â Iâm uncomfortably reminded of Detective Carterâs questions regarding Dolan and Kendallâs reluctance to give me a straight answer. Regardless, I know for certain that sheâs not connected to Peck or whoever sent him.
âSheâs in over her head, Robyn, and sheâll always be. Comes with the territory. Perhaps the Mancinis can run a business that looks clean on paper, but they will always be connected. The circumstances surrounding Dolanâs death are still odd.â
âOh, come on. I thought we were past that.â
âWhat if this whole thing about a third player is just a distraction?â
âThatâs the theory as far as Iâm concerned. Kendall doesnât believe in him either. Just some smokescreens from the Biancos.â
âWhat if itâs not the Biancos behind those smokescreens?â
The doorbell rings, and he gets up to get the food, leaving me to ponder what exactly he means by that. He doesnât trust Kendall. She has doubts about him. Pity, theyâll just have to live with the fact that because of me, theyâll be in each otherâs lives in some way. Kendall has her hands full. She spent the last few years grieving both of her parents and battling homophobia and sexism thrown at her from both âfriendsâ and foes.
